Derrick Tabb, Co-founder of The Roots of Music (USA)
Derrick Tabb, born on May 27, 1975, in the historic Tremé neighborhood of New Orleans, is a GRAMMY-winning drummer and a beacon of community change. He began his musical journey at the age of 7, turning his passion into a profession by age 11. A pivotal figure in his early life was his middle school band director, who deeply influenced his personal and musical growth.
In 1994, Tabb helped form the Loony Tunes Brass Band, which later became the renowned Hot 8 Brass Band. However, his journey took a significant turn in 1996 when he joined the Rebirth Brass Band, achieving national acclaim and winning a GRAMMY in 2012 for the album “Rebirth of New Orleans.”
Beyond his musical accomplishments, Derrick is the co-founder of The Roots of Music, a non-profit organization established in 2007 in response to funding cuts to music programs post-Hurricane Katrina. This program offers free musical education and academic support to at-risk youth in New Orleans, nurturing the next generation of musicians and community leaders. Through his work with The Roots of Music, Derrick has not only preserved the musical heritage of New Orleans but also provided a safe and creative outlet for hundreds of children, embodying the spirit of resilience and community support.
Music ecosystems. Why do they matter?
Music ecosystems are all about connecting people and culture, especially in a place as vibrant as New Orleans. They’re crucial because they help nurture local talent and keep our rich cultural traditions alive. More than that, they provide a safe space for our kids, steering them towards positive activities and away from situations that could lead them into dangerous territory.
What does the music-ecosystem future look like to you?
Looking ahead, I see a music ecosystem that keeps growing and changing, using new tech to reach more people and make a bigger impact. This future is for everyone, making sure that music isn’t just for those who can afford it but for anyone who wants to be a part of the band.
Name one other music-ecosystem builder that inspires you
My middle school band director, Donald Richardson, was a huge inspiration for me. He taught me the discipline it takes to perform at my highest level and inspired me to change lives like he changed mine. He demanded excellence and supported us as we achieved it. His legacy is always with me, whether that is on stage as a drummer, in the classroom as a teacher, or in the world as the leader of The Roots of Music.
What personal commitment can you make towards a world with better music ecosystems?
My personal pledge is to keep pushing The Roots of Music to do more. We want to not only bring up great musicians but also great people who make their communities better. By working with local schools and businesses, we’re building a strong music scene that’s about more than just notes and rhythms—it’s about building a better future for all of us.
