Music ecosystems. Why do they matter?

Music Ecosystems matter, especially in thriving music scenes because they capture the essence of those who create culture in their communities. Often these communities already exist without formal structure, but they have all the components of a healthy and vibrant chain of growth. Tracking the flow of an ecosystem can help identify change agents, opportunities for improvement and places where areas of diversity can be more emphasized.

What does the music-ecosystem future look like to you, post-pandemic?

Post-pandemic feels so far off! However, one thing about all ecosystems, especially music ones, during times of change, those who adapt make the best of their opportunities. On a nuts and bolts level, musicians and artists will have to learn to thrive under more health regulated circumstances, and on an emotional level, creators are still tasked with the output of their best work.

Name one other music-ecosystem builder that inspires you

I am a huge fan of Lisa Gedgaudas from Denver Arts and Venues. I appreciate how Lisa thinks about all of the pieces of a music ecosystem. Her forward thinking opens doors for unique areas of funding, a broader perspective on art that’s considered “viable” and she’s so adept at keeping her finger on the pulse of the changing areas of music communities.

What personal commitment can you make towards a world with better music ecosystems?

My personal commitment is to continue supporting independent artists, putting art and music in unconventional spaces.
